| Obverse description | Central field bears the Portuguese royal arms — a quartered escutcheon displaying the five quinas (shields charged with bezants) of Portugal within a bordure of castles — surmounted by an elaborate open crown with fleurs-de-lis and arched elements. The shield is flanked by two rampant supporters, consistent with the Portuguese royal heraldic tradition of the late 17th century. A circular Latin legend surrounds the design, reading PETRVS . II . DG . P . REX . B ., identifying Pedro II as King of Portugal by Divine Grace and Lord of Brazil. The entire composition is enclosed within a milled or toothed border typical of hammered coinage of the period. |
