| Reverse description | Central device depicts the Kaaba rendered in low relief, surrounded by four crossed swords arranged diagonally to form a diamond-shaped frame around the holy structure. A stylized drop of blood appears below the Kaaba at the centre of the composition, symbolizing the martyrs of the Mecca incident of 1987. Arabic legends in the upper field carry the Quranic-style exhortation to Muslim unity, with bilingual inscriptions in Arabic and Latin script along the lower exergue. The solar hijri year 1407 and the Gregorian year 1987 appear flanking the lower legend. The design is contained within a plain inner border and a reeded outer rim. |

| Additional information |
Trial strikes of the Islamic Republic period are poorly documented in Western references, and this piece almost certainly predates the eventual circulating 20 Rial design rather than representing an abandoned type. Iran's post-revolutionary mint program throughout the 1980s was complicated by war expenditures — the Iran-Iraq conflict consumed state resources through exactly this period — leaving several denominations in flux between intended specifications and what actually reached circulation.
