Belarus issued this piece in 1997 as part of an early commemorative program launched shortly after the National Bank gained full operational independence following the Soviet dissolution. Biathlon held particular significance in the former Soviet sporting infrastructure — the USSR had dominated the discipline at international competition for decades, and newly independent states like Belarus were keen to claim that athletic inheritance as their own.
