The Castle of Mir, a 16th-century fortified residence in the Grodno region, passed through several noble families before falling into ruin after World War I. Heavy damage sustained during Napoleon's 1812 campaign left one tower partially destroyed for over a century. Belarus launched an ambitious commemorative silver program in the late 1990s partly to assert cultural identity following independence in 1991, and the Mir Castle — added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 — was a natural subject. Active restoration work was still ongoing at the time of this coin's issue.
