The International Year of the Child piedfort was issued by the Maldives Monetary Authority in the same year the institution itself was only newly established — the MMA had been founded in 1981, which creates a cataloging ambiguity around the issuing authority attribution for this 1979 piece. Piedforts of this era were almost exclusively produced for collector sets and diplomatic gifts, virtually never entering circulation.
At twice the standard planchet thickness, the striking pressure required often produces exceptionally sharp detail on low-mintage issues like this one. KM#P1 designation confirms it as the first piedfort listed for Maldivian coinage.
