| Obverse description | Central motif depicting the Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (bunga raya), the national flower of Malaysia, rendered in high relief with five broad petals radiating from a prominent central pistil. The current Malaysian 20 sen belongs to the third series of Bank Negara coinage, introduced after a 2011 redenomination exercise that eliminated the 1 and 5 sen coins from circulation. Nickel brass was chosen partly to reduce production costs relative to the older cupronickel pieces, and partly to improve vending machine compatibility across a retail sector that had grown substantially since the previous series.
