Obverse description Central motif depicting the Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (bunga raya), the national flower of Malaysia, rendered in high relief with five broad petals radiating from a prominent central pistil. The date appears to the right of the flower, with the denomination '20 SEN' inscribed below. The legend 'BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA' arcs along the upper periphery of the field. The design is executed in a clean, modern style with fine detail on the petals.

The current Malaysian 20 sen belongs to the third series of Bank Negara coinage, introduced after a 2011 redenomination exercise that eliminated the 1 and 5 sen coins from circulation. Nickel brass was chosen partly to reduce production costs relative to the older cupronickel pieces, and partly to improve vending machine compatibility across a retail sector that had grown substantially since the previous series.
