| Obverse description | Bare-headed portrait of Malietoa Tanumafili II facing left, rendered in high relief with careful attention to the hair and facial features. The engraver's initials 'HP', attributing the work to Thomas Humphrey Paget, appear in the field below the truncation. The circumferential legend 'MALIETOA TANUMAFILI II SAMOA I SISIFO' runs in raised Latin capitals around the full periphery of the coin. |

Samoa's 1967 coinage — of which this piece is part — was the country's first decimal series, introduced as Western Samoa prepared to assert greater economic independence under the long rule of Malietoa Tanumafili II, who had held the position of O le Ao o le Malo since 1963. The series was struck at the Royal Mint in London and released ahead of full decimal adoption, effectively replacing a currency system still tied to New Zealand's pound.
