| Obverse description | Left-facing bare-headed portrait bust of Julius Nyerere, first President of Tanzania, engraved in high relief and occupying the central field. Flanking the effigy on either side are decorative floral sprays rendered in fine detail. The circular legend reads 'TANZANIA' along the upper periphery, with the date '1975' continuing to the right, and 'RAIS WA KWANZA' (meaning 'First President') arcing along the lower periphery. The design is the work of engraver Christopher Ironside. |
