Reverse description The reverse features a detailed relief depiction of the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, the masterwork of Ottoman imperial architect Mimar Sinan, set within an ogival arch-shaped inner border. To the lower left, an ornate Ottoman tughra cartouche bears the dates '1588-1988', commemorating the 400th anniversary of Sinan's death. Trees and secondary architectural elements flank the mosque composition. The curved legend 'MİMAR SİNAN 400. ANMA YILI' arcs along the upper periphery of the coin.

Additional information

Mimar Sinan died in 1588, making this a quatercentenary issue — four hundred years after the death of the chief Ottoman architect responsible for over 300 structures, including the Süleymaniye and Selimiye mosques. Turkey's commemorative gold program of the late 1980s was issued in limited proof strikes through the Turkish State Mint in Istanbul, with distribution handled largely through numismatic channels rather than circulation.
