Reverse description The reverse is printed in violet and purple tones on a pale ground. The left half is occupied by an intricate overlapping guilloche rosette pattern in multiple layers. The cupon was Moldova's transitional currency, introduced in 1992 as a stopgap while the leu was being prepared — technically a coupon-money hybrid rather than a full banknote, which is why the series carries the designation "cupon" rather than a proper denomination title. Moldova had only declared independence from the Soviet Union in August 1991, and this note entered circulation before the country had established the institutional framework for a permanent currency.

The print run of just over twelve million is modest by any standard, and the series was withdrawn relatively quickly once the leu was introduced in 1993.
