| Additional information |
Palau's marine protection coin program launched in 1992, making this 1998 gold issue part of one of the earliest and most sustained national conservation coinage series in the Pacific. The Republic of Palau, independent only since 1994 under a Compact of Free Association with the United States, used numismatic exports as a significant revenue stream from almost the moment of sovereignty — the coin program predates independence itself, issued under the transitional government.
Fr#3 in Friedberg places it firmly within the slender canon of recognized Palauan gold, a catalog that remains short by any measure.
