De Javasche Bank, established in Batavia in 1828 as the colonial central bank of the Dutch East Indies, issued this high-denomination 200 Gulden note during a period of relative economic stability before the commodity price collapses of the early 1930s devastated the plantation economy. At 200 Gulden, this sat well above everyday transactional use — circulation was essentially confined to commercial and banking operations, which kept most examples out of ordinary hands entirely.
Enschedé's long relationship with Dutch colonial note production meant consistent intaglio quality, and the Haarlem-printed sheets were shipped to Batavia for issue. The watermark remains the primary security device for the series.
