| Additional information |
Ibo Island sits in the Quirimbas Archipelago off Mozambique's northern coast and served as one of the Indian Ocean's more significant slaving and ivory trading hubs under Portuguese colonial administration from the late 18th century. The island's fort, built in 1791, remains one of the best-preserved colonial structures in sub-Saharan Africa. By the early 20th century, Ibo had been eclipsed by Pemba as the regional administrative center and entered a long economic decline it has never fully reversed.
This 2017 issue belongs to Mozambique's commemorative circulation series highlighting historical sites — a program that has drawn on the country's layered Portuguese, Arab, and Swahili heritage rather than post-independence political iconography.
