The Ora is not legal tender in any conventional sense — it is a community currency issued by the Orania Sakekamer (Orania Chamber of Commerce) and accepted only within the town of Orania in the Northern Cape, an Afrikaner enclave established in 1991 on privately purchased land. The currency has circulated in various forms since 1999, making it one of the longest-running community currencies on the African continent.

The H series, introduced in 2023, represents a redesign cycle rather than a monetary policy shift — the Sakekamer periodically updates the series letter to manage note replacement and discourage counterfeiting at a local scale. JDA Beyers serves as signatory in the capacity of chamber director.
