Issued to mark the 55th anniversary of Guyanese independence from Britain in 1966, this commemorative note was among the first polymer issues from the Bank of Guyana — a significant shift for a central bank that had relied on cotton-paper substrate throughout its history. The Canadian Bank Note Company, which has maintained a long printing relationship with Guyana, produced the note at its Ottawa facility.
At 2000 dollars, the denomination was introduced specifically for this commemorative release rather than slotted into an existing circulation series, which limits its practical transaction use but makes it a clean marker of the anniversary in polymer form.
