Laos has issued lunar calendar commemoratives with some regularity since the 1990s, largely targeting the Southeast Asian collector market and overseas diaspora. This piece is struck in the year of the Rooster, which in the 60-year Sino-Vietnamese sexagenary cycle fell in 2017 — the Fire Rooster year specifically, considered among the more auspicious iterations of the sign.
