Zambia's 1994 World Cup issue arrived under a long shadow. In April 1993, eighteen members of the Zambian national football squad — along with five FAZ officials and the crew — died when their military aircraft crashed into the Atlantic off Gabon en route to a qualifier in Senegal. The rebuilt team, coached by Roald Poulsen and stocked largely with home-based replacements, came agonizingly close to qualifying for the very tournament this coin commemorates, losing to Ivory Coast on away goals.
The coin was never a circulation piece — struck for the collector market and exported almost immediately.
