Obverse description Central vignette presents a portrait of José Celestino Mutis (1732–1808), Spanish botanist, priest and physician, set against a cartographic vignette of the American continent rendered in fine intaglio linework. The denomination numeral '2000' appears at upper left and lower right within guilloche underprint panels, with the date 'MADRID 24 DE ABRIL DE 1992' and three facsimile signatures of the Governor, Auditor and Cashier inscribed along the lower margin.

Reverse description The central vignette reproduces the ornamental gate of the Real Jardín Botánico (Royal Botanical Garden) in Madrid, executed in intaglio. To the right, a vignette reproduces the cover of Mutis's celebrated work on Cinchona trees, 'Historia de los Árboles de la Quina', flanked by the Spanish coat of arms and a fleur-de-lis motif. Fine guilloche underprint work frames the composition across the full field.
Reverse lettering 2000 / 2000 BANCO DE ESPAÑA DOS MIL PESETAS
