| Reverse description | The reverse features a large Cross of the Order of Christ occupying the central field, its four arms extending nearly to the rim and dividing the field into four quadrants, each containing the mint letter 'R' (for Rio de Janeiro). The date appears in the upper portion of the peripheral legend, which encircles the cross. The motto legend reads continuously around the coin, interrupted by small star or cross ornaments as dividers. The bold, deeply struck cross and the repeated mint marks are hallmarks of the Brazilian colonial gold coinage of this period. |
