Ganesh Man Singh, commemorated here, led Nepal's pro-democracy movement through decades of Panchayat autocracy and survived imprisonment and a death sentence under Mahendra Shah before seeing multiparty democracy restored in 1990 — a restoration he then declined to capitalize on personally, refusing any ministerial post. His death in 1997 left him one of the few South Asian independence-era figures who genuinely walked away from power.
