Obverse description Central field features a stylized, geometric yantra-like design composed of interlocking rectangular compartments, reminiscent of a traditional Nepali royal cipher or tantric diagram. Within the compartments, Devanagari inscriptions spell out the royal titulature of King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev, flanked by auspicious symbols including a lotus flower, a sun motif, a conch shell, a trident, and a lamp. The Bikram Sambat year 2060 appears at the base of the central device. The entire design is framed by a beaded border encircling the coin's periphery, with the field divided between a mirror-polished proof surface and a frosted relief.

Additional information

Nepal's 2003 commemorative silver program coincided with the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Everest, summited by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary on 29 May 1953. The issue was authorized under Gyanendra Bir Bikram, who had assumed the throne in 2001 following the palace massacre that killed nine members of the royal family, including King Birendra. Gyanendra's reign was politically turbulent from the outset, with a Maoist insurgency intensifying across the country throughout the commemorative's production year.

KM#1201 is a one-year type with no subsequent restrike recorded.
