| Reverse description | The reverse of the host coin features a heraldic eagle displayed, head turned to the right, with wings spread and radiating glory lines emanating from behind. The eagle bears a striped shield on its breast, holds an olive branch in its right talon and a bundle of arrows in its left. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs around the upper periphery, and the denomination QUAR. DOL. appears at the bottom within a beaded border. |

Spain authorized a series of countermarks on circulating Spanish colonial coinage in Cuba during the 1870s as a direct response to the monetary chaos of the Ten Years' War — the first Cuban independence uprising, which ran from 1868 to 1878. Counterfeit and debased coins flooded the island as the colonial economy strained under wartime conditions, and the countermark program was intended to validate and re-authorize specific pieces for continued circulation.
The R4.2 designation distinguishes a specific host coin and countermark pairing. Host coin condition varies enormously within this type, as the countermark was applied to already-circulating pieces.
