Comments

Tamaulipas was one of several Mexican states that issued its own fractional paper currency during the 1870s, when a chronic shortage of small coinage left commerce functionally paralyzed at the retail level. These state-issued créditos were locally authorized emergency instruments, not federal currency, and their legal standing varied considerably depending on which administration happened to be in power at the time of redemption.

The 1876 date places this note squarely within the political turbulence preceding Porfirio Díaz's successful revolt against President Lerdo de Tejada — a period when confidence in any government paper, state or federal, was already fragile.
