Châlons-sur-Marne's commercial chamber issued these aluminium pieces in 1920 as part of the broader French emergency coinage phenomenon that followed the First World War. The wartime hoarding of metal coins — driven by franc instability and commodity speculation — had gutted circulation so thoroughly that hundreds of local chambers of commerce across France were still filling the gap years after the armistice, aluminium being the cheapest available option by that point.
