La Guixolense was a consumer cooperative based in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, on the Costa Brava, and like dozens of Catalan cooperatives and municipal bodies during the Civil War years, it issued its own small-denomination scrip to address the acute shortage of fractional coinage that followed the July 1936 uprising. The Republican government's grip on coin supply had effectively collapsed at the local level, and entities with any community standing — cooperatives, trade unions, town councils — filled the vacuum themselves.
At 52 x 34 mm, these pieces circulated as functional substitutes for coins and were redeemed, when at all, only within the cooperative's own membership network.
