Additional information

British Honduras remained a formal Crown Colony throughout this coin's production run, a status that became increasingly awkward as neighbouring territories gained independence through the 1960s. The colony's own independence movement was complicated by a long-standing Guatemalan territorial claim to the entire country — a dispute that kept British troops stationed there well past the point when most Caribbean dependencies had been decolonised. The coins continued circulating under the British Honduras name until the country was renamed Belize in 1973, the same year this type was retired.
