Bermuda's parish series, issued through the early 1980s, was conceived as a collector program tying each denomination to one of the island's nine historical parishes. Devonshire Parish — named after William Cavendish, the 1st Earl of Devonshire, who held an early stake in the Somers Isles Company — is among the least prominent parishes administratively, which may explain why this particular piece generates less collector competition than Hamilton or St. George entries in the same run.
KM#37a denotes the sterling proof striking, distinguished from the base-metal circulation issue. Bermuda's Franklin Mint-produced proofs from this period are occasionally found with spotting beneath the lacquer applied during post-strike processing.
