Additional information

The Oglala Lakota Sioux Nation began issuing its own coinage as an assertion of tribal sovereignty, though these pieces circulate primarily as collector items rather than in everyday commerce on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Sitting Bull himself was Hunkpapa Lakota — a different band from the Oglala — making his appearance on an Oglala issue a pan-Lakota political statement rather than a strictly tribal one.
