Obverse description Bare-headed effigy of King Mwambutsa IV facing slightly left, rendered in high relief with naturalistic modelling of facial features. The portrait occupies the central field with no truncation visible. A circular legend surrounds the effigy, reading CINQUANTIÈME ANNIVERSAIRE DU REGNE above and S.M. MWAMBUTSA IV below, separated by decorative dot stops.

Reverse description The royal arms of Burundi, comprising a shield bearing a lion passant and supported by crossed spears and a rifle, topped by a crown and flanked by olive branches, occupies the central field. The entire device is encircled by a wreath of olive or laurel branches tied at the base. The legend ROYAUME du BURUNDI and COURONNEMENT arc across the upper field above the arms, while the date 1 SEPT 1966 appears to either side of the shield. The motto GANZA SABWA is inscribed on a ribbon below the arms, and the denomination 25 F. appears in the lower field beneath the wreath.
