These coins were struck during Mahendra's period of direct rule, following his 1960 dissolution of Nepal's elected parliament and ban on political parties. The Panchayat system he imposed — a partyless, palace-controlled structure — made the monarchy the explicit center of national authority, which these issues reflect in their issuing format. Mahendra ruled by decree until his death in 1972.
