Issued as part of a WWF-backed conservation series, this coin was struck to raise international awareness of endangered species native to the Malaysian peninsula and Borneo. Bank Negara's decision to produce a high-denomination silver piece at a time when Malaysia was still consolidating its post-independence monetary infrastructure reflected deliberate positioning toward a collector export market rather than domestic circulation.
The series sits among the earliest conservation-themed coinage from any Southeast Asian central bank.
