Crimea has never had the legal standing to issue currency, and no internationally recognized authority backs these pieces. They appeared on the collector market almost immediately after the March 2014 referendum — the speed of production suggesting commercial intent from the outset rather than any genuine administrative function. Russia absorbed Crimea into its ruble zone within weeks, making even a hypothetical local coinage redundant before it could have circulated.
