| Obverse description | Uniformed bust of King Gyanendra Bir Bikram facing left, wearing a plumed crown and traditional Nepalese royal regalia. The effigy is rendered in high relief at the center of the field. A circular Devanagari legend surrounds the portrait, giving the king's full name and title. The accession date in Nepali Sambat era is inscribed in the lower portion of the field below the bust. |

| Additional information |
Gyanendra's first accession in 2001 followed the royal massacre of June 1 that year, in which Crown Prince Dipendra shot and killed nine members of the royal family — including King Birendra — before turning the gun on himself. Dipendra was declared king while comatose and died three days later, making him the only monarch in Nepali history to reign unconscious. Gyanendra, his uncle, inherited the throne under circumstances with no modern parallel.
This commemorative was issued by Nepal Rastra Bank to mark that accession — a politically fraught decision given ongoing public skepticism about the massacre's true circumstances.
