South Ossetia occupies one of the more unusual positions in world numismatics: a partially recognized state whose coins are legal tender nowhere in practical terms, issued by a "national bank" operating in a territory that uses the Russian ruble as its actual currency. These pieces are produced for the collector market, full stop.
Georgy Khetagurov was a 19th-century Ossetian poet and social reformer whose work in the Ossetian language helped standardize its literary form — a genuine cultural figure, not a manufactured nationalist symbol.
