Reverse description The central composition depicts the Transfiguration of Christ: a radiant effigy of Jesus Christ in mandorla glory occupies the upper field, flanked by two standing apostle figures gesturing in reverence. Below, a faithful relief representation of the Karaset Church, a small medieval stone chapel surmounted by a cross, is shown in three-quarter perspective and inscribed 'КАРАСЕТ / X·XII æн.' beneath it. The left and right fields bear the inscription 'АЛАЙНАГ ЕПАРХИ' (Alan Eparchy) in Cyrillic. The lower circular legend, framed by decorative cross medallions, reads 'ХУЫЦАУ ЙЕСО ЧЫРЫСТИЙЫ ХУЫЗАИВДЫ АРГЪУАН', identifying the church's dedication. The design is executed in frosted relief against a mirror-polished dark field.

Additional information

South Ossetia has no internationally recognized central bank with legal authority to issue currency — the territory operates almost entirely on the Russian ruble under a 2009 monetary agreement with Moscow. The "National Bank of South Ossetia" produces these pieces outside any standard numismatic treaty framework, meaning they carry no legal tender status recognized beyond the issuing body itself. Collectors treat them as fantasy issues or exonumia rather than sovereign coinage.

The Transfiguration Church in Tskhinvali sustained significant damage during the August 2008 war with Georgia.
