South Ossetia's National Bank has issued commemorative coins since the early 2000s despite the territory's internationally unrecognized status — only Russia and a handful of states acknowledge its independence following the 2008 war with Georgia. These coins have no meaningful circulation function and are produced almost entirely for the collector market, with distribution handled largely through Russian numismatic dealers. The legal tender status of issues denominated in Zarin is nominal at best, given that the Russian ruble remains the territory's actual currency of daily use.
The "25 Zarin" denomination places this within the upper tier of the Zarin commemorative series.
