| Reverse description | A historic Maldivian sailing dhow (odi) is depicted underway at sea, with an island coastline and palm trees visible in the background at left. Tropical fish are shown swimming leftward in the lower portion of the field, evoking the marine environment of the archipelago. The Beautiful Maldives series was part of a wave of tri-metallic collector issues produced in the mid-1990s by smaller island nations, largely facilitated by European private mints marketing novelty compositions to emerging central banks. The Maldives Monetary Authority had only been established in 1981, and these high-denomination collector pieces — never intended for circulation — were aimed squarely at the international numismatic market rather than domestic monetary use.
The X# prefix in Krause indicates a non-circulating or fantasy issue outside the standard national coinage sequence.
