Part of a twelve-coin Mongolian zodiac series issued across several years in the mid-2000s, this piece was produced for the collector market rather than circulation — Mongolia's tögrög coinage in silver at this weight and fineness was never intended as spending money. The zodiac series drew on the Chinese lunar calendar tradition, which has deep roots in Mongolian culture through centuries of shared history with China and the former Mongol court's own astronomical record-keeping.
