| Reverse description | Central design features a radiant sun above a standing Buddhist statue, flanked on either side by elephant heads with ceremonial lamps, all enclosed within a circular border. The composition is strongly symmetrical and draws upon traditional Lao royal and religious iconography. The country name and denomination appear as a circumferential legend around the design. |

Savang Vatthana was crowned in 1959 but this commemorative was struck over a decade later, a delay that reflected the protracted instability gripping the kingdom. By 1971, the Pathet Lao controlled substantial territory and the Royal Lao Government was propped up almost entirely by American financial support. The coin was produced for international collectors rather than domestic circulation — virtually no Laotian subject would have encountered one.
Savang Vatthana abdicated in 1975 and died in a re-education camp sometime around 1978, making any royal Lao commemorative an artifact of a vanished state.
