Additional information

Ögedei Khan, third son of Genghis, presided over the Mongol Empire at its greatest territorial extent — his armies reached Poland and the Adriatic coast in 1241 before withdrawing, likely sparing Western Europe from full conquest only because Ögedei died that December and his generals returned east for the kurultai. Mongolia's 1997 commemorative program issued several khans in this series, timed loosely around the broader post-Soviet reassertion of Mongolian national identity following the 1992 constitution.
