| Obverse description | Vertically formatted note printed on thin mulberry paper with woodblock-style intaglio impression in brown ink. The upper portion carries a central vertical cartouche with four kanji characters reading the Meiji era issue inscription, flanked on either side by stylized weeping willow branches and cloud scrollwork in traditional Japanese decorative style. The lower section presents two confronting shishi (lion-dog) guardians amid foliate vignettes, with an oval red seal stamp applied at centre. |

A central rectangular cartouche bordered by a continuous guilloche of chrysanthemum roundels and comma-scroll (tomoe) motifs contains the large denomination inscription in three kanji characters. Below the cartouche, two confronting dragons in low-relief woodblock style flank a square issuing-authority seal panel bearing the kanji legend of the Minbusho (Civil Department) and its subordinate bureau. |
