Additional information

Malaita is the most populous island in the Solomon Islands yet has historically received the least development investment — a disparity that fueled the ethnic tensions behind the 1998–2003 civil conflict known locally as "the Tensions," during which Malaitan militants formed the Malaita Eagle Force and eventually forced the sitting prime minister from office. The $3 denomination itself has no precedent in standard Solomon Islands coinage and appears to be a collector-market issue rather than a circulating denomination.
