Tromelin is an uninhabited French-administered speck of coral in the Indian Ocean, notable primarily for the 1761 wreck of the Utile, whose enslaved Malagasy passengers were abandoned on the island for fifteen years after French sailors were rescued and sailed away without them. It has no economy, no population, and no need for circulating currency.
