| Reverse description | Central round hole surrounded by a raised square frame set at 45 degrees, forming an eight-pointed star motif with four diamond-shaped points extending diagonally and four triangular points at the cardinal positions, all in low relief. The peripheral legend 'TERRITORY·OF·NEW·GUINEA' arcs around the upper half and '·THREE·PENCE·' around the lower half, separated by dot stops, within a beaded border. The geometric design, engraved by George Kruger Gray, is characteristic of the distinctive holed coinage issued for the Territory. |

| Additional information |
New Guinea's coinage was administered through the Territory of New Guinea under Australian mandate, and this small denomination was struck at the Melbourne and Perth mints depending on the year. Production was sharply curtailed after 1942 when Japanese forces occupied much of the territory, making wartime issues from the final years of this range genuinely scarcer than earlier strikes.
