Obverse description Bare-headed effigy of King George VI facing left, modelled by Thomas Humphrey Paget, with fine detail in the hair and facial features. The truncation of the neck is plain and unadorned. The circular legend GEORGE VI KING EMPEROR runs around the periphery, divided by the effigy, with the designer's initials HP appearing on the truncation. The coin exhibits a milled border surrounding the entire design.

Reverse description Two crossed patu (traditional Māori short-handled striking weapons) displayed centrally in the field, their blades facing outward, as designed by George Kruger Gray.
