| Obverse description | Central field displays the quartered royal arms of Castile and León — quarters bearing alternately a castle and a rampant lion — surmounted by an imperial crown. Gothic letter M mint marks flank the shield on either side, identifying the Mexico City mint. A partial Latin legend encircles the design within a beaded border, reading CAROLVS on the right and portions of the royal title to the left, consistent with the style of early Colonial cob coinage struck at the first American mint. |

| Reverse description | Two crowned Pillars of Hercules flank a central panel divided by horizontal bands, the upper portion bearing a Gothic letter M above the inscription PLVS VLTR (an abbreviation of the motto PLVS VLTRA), with three horizontal bars below and an assayer's letter R at the base, denoting the assayer responsible for the coinage. The pillars are each surmounted by a royal crown, and a partial encircling Latin legend referring to the Iberian kingdoms appears in the border field. The overall design is characteristic of the macuquina (cob) style, with irregular flan and bold if sometimes off-center striking. |
