Smålands Privat Bank was one of Sweden's early provincial note-issuing banks, operating under the riksbank framework that permitted private institutions to issue their own paper currency against a metallic reserve. The Riksdaler Banco was the unit of account tied to the Riksbank's copper and silver standard — a deliberately cautious anchor during a period when provincial bank failures elsewhere in Europe had made the public wary of private paper.
