| Obverse description | The copper-plated steel centre depicts a polar azimuthal projection map of the Arctic region, with meridian and latitude grid lines radiating from the North Pole, rendered in the field. The date '2014' appears in the legend at the top, above the map. The Cyrillic inscription 'СЕВЕРНЫЙ ПОЛЮС' (North Pole) arcs along the lower portion of the inner centre. The nickel-plated steel outer ring is decorated with a continuous series of stylised snowflake motifs in relief. |

Russia's "North Pole" series commemorates the Soviet-era drifting ice stations — manned scientific camps established on Arctic pack ice beginning with SP-1 in 1937, when Ivan Papanin's four-man team spent 274 days adrift on a floe that traveled over 2,500 kilometers before breaking apart near Greenland. The bimetallic format was introduced to the Russian commemorative rouble series in the 1990s as a cost-effective alternative to silver, and by 2014 the Central Bank had issued dozens of designs in this specification.
