| Obverse description | Quartered shield bearing the arms of Grand Master Jean de Vallette: the first and fourth quarters displaying a gyrfalcon and a lion (the personal arms of the Vallette family), the second and third quarters bearing the plain cross of the Order of St. John. The shield is rendered in a bold, somewhat crude hammered style typical of mid-sixteenth-century Maltese coinage. The heraldic composition occupies the central field, with the surrounding legend running along the coin's inner border. |
