Additional information

Ludiente is a village in the interior of Castellón province that in 1936 had fewer than 600 inhabitants. When the Civil War severed normal coin supply lines, hundreds of Spanish municipalities issued emergency paper and cardboard fractional currency — but most were larger towns with functioning print shops. That a village this small produced its own fiduciary issue speaks to how completely the Republican monetary infrastructure collapsed in the interior during the first weeks of the conflict.
